Shergill is a gotra/surname of the Jat ethnicity found in state of Punjab in India. Sher Gill was one of the eight sons of the Ferozepur King Pal Gill who was the founder of Gill surname. The descendants of Sher Gill are using Shergill as their surname and it has been noticed that many Shergills are using Gill as their surname since that is the original surname of this family.

[edit]Notable Shergills

This is one of the largest and most important Jat tribes. They are found throughout Punjab. They are said to be descend from the Raja of Garh Mithila. The Shergills are said to have come from this great tribe. My belief is that the Gill Jats are from the Caspian Sea area, homeland of Massagetae. As the Caspian Sea was once known as the Sea of Gillan, per Sir Sikes. The plural of Gill in Punjabi is Gillan, ie Gillan De Munde. Moreover, the Gill and Gillian presence in England may well be the result of Alanic (Massagetae) settlement in 400s A.D.
Sardar Jassa Singh Naoshehra Nangali was of Shergill Jat tribe. Chowdri Sarwani, the fifteen descendant from Sher, the founder of tribe built the village Naoshehra (near Ferozepur Distt), otherwise known as Raipur Sarwani during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shahjehan, and was permitted to hold it, rent free as renummeration for collecting the revenue of the surrounding districts.
Shamsher Singh Mari was of Shergill Jat Tribe . Several villages were found by the Shergill in Amritsar namely Mallanwala, Dewa, Dewa Masur and Mari .
The founder of the Nishanwalia Misl was Shergill Jat of village Mansurwal (Ferozepur district)
The Majithia Rulers/Maharajas of Majha were also Shergills. World famous painter Amrita Sher-Gil, who was the daughter of Sikh Aristocrat Umrao Singh Sher-Gil Majithia, also belonged to Shergill Jats. Jimmy Shergill and Rabbi Shergill are some other known people of the Shergill Jat clan. There are many people of Shergill clan who are soldiers and officers in the Indian Army.
Indian Army Major Angrez Singh Shergill and Major General K.M.S. Shergill of 17 Poona Horse are a couple of examples.
